Hollow Point Confusion

Hollow-point bullets are LEGAL to purchase, store, use for lawful self defense inside the home (only for justified use of force situations), and travel to and from the range for practice within New Jersey. Hollow-points are NOT LEGAL FOR LAWFUL CARRY OUTSIDE THE HOME! We highly encourage you to take a USE OF FORCE class at your local range! For more information: Transportation and Use of Hollow Point Ammunition by Sportsmen | New Jersey State Police Firearms Information

Exceptions for LEGAL CARRY HOLLOW POINTS can be found at the following link at section 13: Firearms Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) | New Jersey State Police:

"Ammunition lacking a hollow cavity at the tip, such as those with a polymer filling, are not considered to be hollow point ammunition. An example of this can be seen with the Hornady Critical Defense / Critical Duty, Cor-Bon PowRball / Glaser Safety Slug and Nosler Inc. Defense ammunition."

In-State Purchase Limits

New Jersey law requires all IN-STATE RETAILERS to immediately report any ammunition sale meeting or exceeding 2,000 rounds in a single transaction. While you may purchase 2,000 or more rounds at one time from an in-state dealer in one transaction, it's advised you don't until we found out what they plan on doing with this list. Our community needs us to continue to support our local retailers! If you don't need to exceed this limit in a single transaction, you should consider supporting our local retailers before it too late! Click here for more information: N.J. Stat. § 2C:58-3.3a

"Any transaction involving the sale, transfer, assignment, or disposition of 2,000 or more rounds of handgun ammunition and information relating to each transaction shall be immediately reported to the superintendent in accordance with this section and paragraph (3) of subsection b. of N.J.S. 2C:58-2."

Long-Term Storage & Stockpiling

We strongly encourage long-term storage and stockpiling of ammunition. There are no legal restrictions on how much ammunition you can store at home, but safety should always be your top priority. Here are some tips for safe storage:

Containers: Consider using metal ammo cans and/or cabinets. If you have children, don't skip adding locks for extra safety and security.

Storage: Ideally, keep ammunition in a climate-controlled environment with stable temperature and humidity. If that's not feasible, explore alternative methods to protect your ammo from extreme conditions. If you can get creative enough, you can create and control the environment in an isolated space within unconditioned spaces and still protect your investment. Ideally, you should avoid attics and unattached spaces with extreme temperature fluctuations if expecting to store for very long periods of time.

Safety: Watch the video below from NSSF for important safety and fire prevention tips.

Read More: For guidance on how much ammunition to keep, check out our article "How Much Ammo is Enough When SHTF?" In brief, aim for at least 1,000 rounds of practice ammunition per firearm and 100 rounds of specialty ammunition per firearm. Unfortunately, there's no one size fits all. Explore the articles we listed below to determine what resonates with you the most and best suited for your situation.

Remember the old adage: "There are only two situations where you have too much ammo. The first is when you’re on fire. The second is when you’re swimming."

Is Storing Large Quantities of Ammo Dangerous?

No! What happens when ammo cartridges burn? This video was created to educate and inform fire departments nationwide and to help firefighters better address the realities of fires in which sporting ammunition is present. The video was produced by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI), the standards-setting organization for the industry.

TIP: DO NOT try this at home, your neighbors won't appreciate it.

You Have the Right to Remain Innocent

This seminar is over 12 years old but worth every second watching! If you appreciate what I'm doing with this website, please watch this video and pay close attention (I'm not selling your anything). Regent Law Professor James Duane gives viewers startling reasons why they should always exercise their 5th Amendment rights when questioned by government officials.

COMMENT: Regardless of how you intrepret this video, you should always be respectful to any officer or government official you encounter. This doesn't mean you have to cooperate, even if your innocent or have nothing to hide!

Long-Term Storage Accessories

Please ensure that, regardless of the brand or product you select, the containers are stackable and designed to be sturdy. They should also have gaskets to prevent moisture from entering. If you use containers, stack them from the bottom up. Note that most shelving units may not adequately support the weight unless specifically designed to do so. Be ready to remove the shelves and stock from the bottom.

These products are not endorsements or recommendations. I’ve provided various options for each category (cans, desiccants, locks, containers, etc.) to give you ideas. Your needs may vary, and you might find better prices or products if you shop around. Consider looking online, visiting Tractor Supply or other hardware stores, attending gun shows, or asking friends and local ranges. Ammo cans come in different sizes (30 cal, 50 cal) and materials (metal, plastic). For desiccants, you can use electronic devices like plug-in goldenrods (for safes), standard desiccant packs, or rechargeable dehumidifiers.

Quality and pricing can vary significantly! You might also consider using alternatives like Tupperware, a broken refrigerator, or a broken deep freezer, depending on your needs. If you’re storing items in less-than-ideal conditions, such as an unconditioned garage, use layering strategies to manage humidity and temperature fluctuations. Additionally, there are optional products like Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI) and oxygen absorbers for extra protection. (WARNING: Avoid storing cash or important documents long-term with Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) such as Zerust due to potential discoloration). This list is intended to help you get started on your journey.

TIP: DO NOT allow metal and concrete to stay in contact with one another for extended periods of time.
